One gift from everyone: 585 gold
When the entire department or family is contributing, get her this necklace: a smoky quartz star on a 585 gold chain for PLN 1,180. The star is 1 cm, drilled at the tip and threaded onto the chain without a setting. The chain is 42 cm long with a 3 cm extension, so you can adjust the necklace length from 42 to 45 cm. Gold-plated silver jewelry is cheaper, but the plating wears off over time.

Fineness 585 means 585 parts of pure gold per 1,000 parts of the alloy, or 58.5%, which corresponds to 14 karats. Pure gold is very soft, so it is combined with other metals to make jewelry. Polish hallmarking law allows seven gold fineness grades, from 333 to 999, and the fineness is usually confirmed by a hallmark on the item. When the combined weight of the gold parts is less than 1 g, the law does not require a hallmark, but the seller must state the fineness and weight on the tag.
How much should you spend on a 40th birthday gift?
One person can give a bracelet or earrings, costing PLN 100 to 300. For a group gift, the per-person contribution matters: a dozen or so zlotys for a ring from female colleagues at work and about PLN 100–150 for gold from the entire department.
