Yes, gold-plated silver wears off because the plating is a thin layer of gold over 925 silver, and over time it wears away where the jewelry rubs against your skin, clothing, or a surface. This applies to all gold-plated jewelry, including ours. 585 yellow gold has no coating to wear away because gold makes up 58.5% of the entire alloy. The difference is reflected in the price: the rock crystal necklace from the Romantic Story line costs PLN 469 in gold-plated silver with a 45 cm chain, while the same pendant in 585 gold costs PLN 2,199, without a chain.
- Where it wears off first: on the inside of a ring, on clasps, and on the side of a bracelet that faces the desk. Pendants and earrings retain their color longer.
- What damages the plating: friction, perfumes and detergents, chlorinated and salt water, and sweat. Put on jewelry after applying cosmetics, and remove it before cleaning, swimming in a pool, or exercising.
- Does it tarnish: gold itself does not. The silver underneath may darken, especially where the plating has worn off.
- When to choose 585 gold: for a ring or wedding band worn every day. For a necklace worn on special occasions, gold-plated silver is sufficient.
What is underneath the plating
In our product descriptions, “gold-plated silver” and “gold-gilded silver” mean the same thing: 925 sterling silver covered with 24-karat gold. When the plating wears off, bright 925 silver shows through in that spot.
Friction: on the inside of a ring and on clasps
The plating wears off fastest on the inside of a ring, on clasps and edges, and on a bracelet on the side you slide across your desk. On a necklace, it wears off where it rubs against clothing. Items kept loose in one box rub against each other, so store each one in a separate pouch.
In the tiger's eye Good Luck Bracelet, only the beads around the stones and at the ends of the cord are metal. If you wear it every day at a keyboard, choose silver beads. The gold-plated version matches a gold necklace or earrings.
Perfumes, balms and detergents
Perfumes, creams, oils and dishwashing liquids weaken gold plating, causing it to dull and wear off more quickly. Put on your jewelry only after applying cosmetics, and remove it before cleaning or washing dishes.
Chlorine in the pool and salt in the sea
Chlorinated pool water and salty seawater dull gold plating and weaken the coating. Remove gold-plated jewelry before swimming, using the sauna or bathing in the sea.
Sweat during exercise
Sweat accelerates silver tarnishing and damages gold-plated surfaces. Leave gold-plated jewelry at home when going to the gym or running.
After wearing your jewelry all day, wipe it with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it before putting it away in its pouch. Save baking soda paste and a baking soda and aluminum foil bath for uncoated silver. Do not clean gold-plated elements or gemstone jewelry this way.
When to pay extra for 585 gold
On 585 gold, a scratch reveals the same alloy in the same colour, and jewelers recommend this fineness for jewelry worn every day because it is usually harder than 750 gold.
Pay extra for 585 gold when buying a ring or wedding band for everyday wear, or a gift intended to last for years, such as for a wedding anniversary. Rings in this fineness are available in the 585 Gold collection. If gold exceeds your budget, choose 925 silver without plating for an everyday ring. It has no plating to wear away, although the silver itself will also become scratched over time, and you can remove dark tarnish using home methods.
Gold-plated silver is enough for a necklace, pendant or earrings worn for special occasions. The amethyst druzy heart necklace has a gold-plated silver setting and costs PLN 228 with a 45 cm chain. If you already have your own pendant, put it on a beaded chain (beads approx. 2 mm, length 45 cm plus a 3 cm extender).

Questions about gold-plated silver
How long does gold-plated silver last? There is no single number of years. It depends on the thickness of the plating and how you wear the jewelry, so the same chain will last longer if you take it off before swimming and exercising.
Does gold-plated silver tarnish? The gold layer does not tarnish because gold does not oxidize in water or air. However, black tarnish may appear on the silver underneath, most often where the plating has already worn away: silver reacts with traces of hydrogen sulfide in the air, like any uncoated silver.
Is it worth buying gold-plated silver? Yes, if you want the color of gold at a price close to that of silver and accept that the plating may wear off over time. The beaded chain costs PLN 129 in the gold-plated version and PLN 99 in the silver version, while the Tiger’s Eye Happiness Bracelet costs PLN 79 in both versions.
Can worn gold plating be renewed? Yes. Our jewelry comes with a one-year warranty: if your claim is accepted, we will plate it again. The exception is chains, which rub against the skin and clothing with every movement, so their plating is not covered by the warranty. We also accept orders to plate other jewelry, and we’ll provide the price and turnaround time at the boutique.
