What affects finger circumference?
Before reaching for a measuring tool, it’s worth knowing that finger circumference isn’t constant. Several factors can change the measurement by as much as a full size:
- The hand on which you wear jewelry. For right-handed people, the fingers on the left hand are usually about one size slimmer than those on the right; for left-handed people, the opposite is true. Measure the finger on the hand where the ring will actually be worn.
- Time of day and temperature. Your finger circumference is different in the morning than in the evening, and your hands also react to the weather: fingers swell slightly in summer and become slimmer in winter. The safest option is to measure at the end of the day, at room temperature.
- Finger shape. If you have a wider knuckle, choose a ring that slides onto your finger with slight resistance — this helps ensure it won’t slip off during the day.

How to measure your finger circumference at home
The easiest option is to use a tape measure: wrap it around your finger so that it lies snugly against the skin without squeezing it. The number of millimeters you read is your finger circumference — use it to choose your ring size.
Don’t have a tape measure? All you need is thread and a ruler. Wrap the thread around the widest part of your finger, mark the point where the ends meet, and then measure its length with a ruler. Don’t pull the thread too tightly — otherwise, the ring may turn out to be too small. For greater accuracy, repeat the measurement two or three times and compare the results.

Ring size chart — Poland, UK, and USA
In Poland and most European countries, a ring size roughly corresponds to the circumference of the finger in millimeters minus 40, with the scale ranging approximately from 4 to 34. In the United Kingdom, letter designations are used (from G to Z), while the USA uses sizes from 4 to 14, often including half sizes. So, a single circumference measurement is all you need to navigate each of these systems:

The values in the chart are approximate and rounded to the nearest typical size. If your result falls between sizes, choose the larger one — a gemstone ring cannot be stretched or made smaller like a metal band.
Gemstone rings and classic bands — what to keep in mind
Gemstone rings differ from those made entirely of silver or gold. A stone has its own structure and weight, and the overall design is usually more substantial than a thin band — meaning the same size may feel slightly different on your finger. That makes careful measuring even more important.
The cut also matters. Faceted rings — featuring smoky quartz, rose quartz, amethyst, opalite, malachite, howlite, or onyx — are narrower, so they feel less noticeable on the finger and are simply more comfortable for many people. Gemstone rings from the exclusive line (rock crystal, citrine, aquamarine, tourmaline, and emerald) are heavier and more substantial, so you’ll feel them more clearly while wearing them.
