Blue Kyanite on Stand No. 248
Blue Kyanite on Stand No. 248
A piece of kyanite from Brazil, 9 cm high and 6 cm wide, on a black metal stand that raises it to 14 cm. A cool blue with lighter streaks runs along the bladed crystals; by a window, their edges show through and reveal a pearly, glassy sheen. In diffused light, the piece is uniformly blue; in sunlight, it separates into lighter and darker bands. The specimen weighs 425 g and takes up about as much space on a desk as a mug.

About the stone
Blue kyanite is an aluminium silicate that forms in metamorphic rocks under high pressure. It forms distinctive bladed and tabular crystals with pronounced cleavage. This mineral is distinguished by its unusual, directional hardness - it is significantly softer along the crystal axis than across it, which historically earned it the name disthene, meaning a stone with two strengths.
Care
Because of kyanite's cleavage and variable hardness, clean it only with a soft, dry cloth and protect it from impacts. Place the specimen on a level surface, away from edges.
