For your mom’s birthday, the safest choice is jewelry that doesn’t require sizing, such as a bracelet with three pearls on a cord for PLN 79, which comes in a universal size with an adjustable clasp. If you’d rather give her a ring, discreetly find the size from one of her own: multiply its inner diameter in millimeters by 3.14 to get her finger circumference, and the amethyst and pearl ring (also PLN 79) comes in three circumference ranges, from 48 to 59 mm. Earrings and necklaces don’t require sizing, so just check whether your mom wears studs and where her chain ends. These same ideas also work for Irene’s name day on Tuesday, October 20, and Ursula’s on Wednesday, October 21.
- No sizing needed: a pearl bracelet for PLN 79, stud earrings for PLN 160, and an aventurine heart necklace for PLN 214–317, where you only choose the length.
- Amethyst and pearl ring, PLN 79: multiply the inner diameter of her ring by 3.14 to get her finger circumference. The size ranges are S 48–51, M 52–55, and L 56–59 mm, so a 17 mm diameter (approx. 53.4 mm circumference) is M.
- A milestone birthday: a rose quartz star, rhodium-plated 925 silver for PLN 479 or 585 gold for PLN 1,270, both made to order, in up to 7 business days.
- In a hurry: a digital gift card from PLN 50, delivered by email, or the boutique at 61 Grzybowska Street in Warsaw. Opening hours and phone number are listed below.
Check her jewelry box: what you can find out without asking
When your mom takes off the ring she wears most often, borrow it for a moment or take another one from her jewelry box that she wears on the same finger. Lay it flat on a millimeter ruler and measure the inner diameter from edge to edge to the nearest half millimeter, once horizontally and once vertically. Also remember which hand and finger she wears it on, because the new ring should fit the same finger.
For necklaces, look at where her favorite chain ends: just below her collarbones or noticeably lower. If it’s in her jewelry box, lay it flat and measure from end to end with a tape measure.
For earrings, just check whether your mum wears studs with backs or drop earrings with hooks. If the box has only clip-ons, she probably doesn’t have pierced ears, so cross earrings off the list.
You can tell the metal and style from the same jewellery box, and our guide has more details on how to match your mum’s style. If your mum has everything, her jewellery box will also show you what’s missing, such as having only necklaces and not a single bracelet.
Bracelet for 79 zł, no measuring required
The Pearl Lucky Bracelet has an adjustable macramé clasp, so your mum can tighten or loosen it herself. The beige nylon cord holds three pearls about 4 mm across, and the silver and gold-plated silver versions cost the same.
Elastic ring for 79 zł: size it using one of her rings
Amethyst and Pearl Ring features faceted amethyst beads about 3 mm across and one pearl on jeweller’s elastic, in silver or gold-plated silver. Amethyst and pearl are traditionally the birthstones for February and June.
Even with an elastic band, you need to choose one of the three circumference ranges. A diameter of 16 mm multiplied by 3.14 gives a circumference of about 50.2 mm, which is S, while 18 mm gives about 56.5 mm, which is L. Measure in two directions, because the inside of the ring may be slightly oval, and a 1 mm error in diameter means about 3 mm in circumference, almost an entire size range.
A diameter of 16.5 mm gives a circumference of about 51.8 mm, which is on the border between S and M. In that case, measure another ring if your mum wears one on the same finger, and compare both results with the size ranges. If it’s still borderline, call us before ordering; the number is below.
The hand matters because for right-handed people, the fingers on the left hand are usually about one size smaller. If you can’t borrow one of her rings, our guide shows you how to measure your finger with a piece of thread. And if you know her size in the Polish sizing system, S is approximately 8–11, M 12–15, and L 16–19. If your mum only wears a wedding ring that she never takes off, go back to the bracelet or choose earrings or a necklace.
Earrings for PLN 160: all you need to know is whether she wears studs or hook earrings
If her jewelry box is mostly filled with earrings that sit right on the earlobe, choose the obsidian stud hearts. These are smooth, shiny hearts made from faceted black obsidian in a gold-tone setting, mounted directly on the post so nothing dangles below. The post and butterfly back are made of 925 silver, in the same gold tone as the setting. Together with the necklace in the next section, your mom will get two hearts: a black one by her ear and a green one on a chain. If she only wears long earrings with hook wires, the necklace is a better choice.
Necklace: choose the length, not the size, PLN 214–317
The aventurine heart necklace costs PLN 214 with a 45 cm chain (42 cm + 3 cm extender), PLN 274 with a 63 cm chain (60 + 3) and PLN 317 with an 83 cm chain (80 + 3). In the photo, the heart is smooth and dark green, in a delicate gold-plated silver setting.
Choose the length to suit her favorite chain: with the shortest one, the heart sits just below the collarbones; with the two longer ones, it hangs lower. If you managed to measure her chain, choose the closest of the three lengths. If your mom wears turtlenecks in autumn, a longer chain will let the heart rest on her sweater.
Green aventurine is quartz that most often contains tiny plates of fuchsite, a chromium-bearing mica. Just a few percent by volume is enough to make the stone distinctly green. Light reflected from these plates creates a metallic sheen called aventurescence.
What to buy a 60- or 70-year-old mom for her birthday
For a milestone birthday, when you want to give a more substantial gift, we recommend the rose quartz star, traditionally considered a stone of love. It costs PLN 479 in rhodium-plated 925 silver or PLN 1,270 in 585 gold. Both versions are made to order, with a lead time of up to 7 business days. The star measures 1 cm, and the chain is 42 cm long with a 3 cm extender, the same length as the shortest chain with the aventurine heart. So it’s a good fit for a mom who wears necklaces just below her collarbones.
