Blue Kyanite on a Stand No. 250
Blue Kyanite on a Stand No. 250
Brazilian kyanite in a compact specimen: 8 cm high, 6 cm wide, and 4 cm deep, on a black stand reaching 13 cm. The blue is cool, with sapphire tones in places, crossed by light streaks along the crystals; its pearly, glassy luster is visible in any lighting, not only sunlight. The dark base sets the specimen apart from the surface it stands on and makes it look lighter than it weighs - and it weighs 384 g.

About the stone
Kyanite, also known by its historical name disthene, is an aluminum silicate formed under high pressure in metamorphic rocks. It is characterized by unusual directional hardness - along the crystal axis, it is noticeably softer than across it. It forms flattened, bladed, and tabular shapes with perfect cleavage. Its color ranges from cool blue to intense sapphire, with a pearly, glassy luster.
Care
Due to kyanite's cleavage, clean the specimen dry using a soft cloth or a delicate brush. Place the specimen on a level surface, away from edges.
