Blue Kyanite on a Stand No. 249

Kyanite from Brazil, 10 cm high and 7 cm wide, on a black stand - 15 cm in total. Its layered, slat-like structure is visible from every side: the crystals lie one on top of another like thin boards, with lighter streaks running between them. The color is a cool blue with sapphire bands; the luster is pearly and glassy, most noticeable along the edges. Weighing 457 g, it stands stably on a desk or shelf and shows the most detail in side lighting.

About the stone

Kyanite is an aluminum silicate that forms in metamorphic rocks under high pressure. It develops distinctive bladed and tabular crystals with pronounced cleavage. A mineralogical curiosity is its directional, unusual hardness - along the crystal axis it is significantly softer than across it, which is why it was formerly called dysthenes, meaning “of two strengths.” This mineral is characterized by a pearly, glassy luster and a cool blue color.

Care

Due to kyanite's pronounced cleavage and variable hardness, clean the stone only when dry, using a soft cloth. Place the specimen on a level surface, away from the edge.
