Rose quartz very rarely forms crystals; it is usually mined in solid masses that are always at least a little milky. That’s a sign that another mineral is inside. Researchers from Caltech in Pasadena dissolved rose quartz from 29 locations around the world, and each time a residue remained: fibers 0.1–0.5 micrometers thick, as pink as the stone itself. They give quartz its color, which comes from iron and titanium. They are most similar to dumortierite, although they are more likely a mineral related to it (Goreva, Ma, Rossman, “American Mineralogist,” 2001).
