How to Find Amber on the Beach? Storm Season Is Just Beginning

Amber is easiest to find the day after a storm, with winds from the north and ideally at dawn — along the drift line, the dark strip of seaweed and sticks that the waves leave on the sand. The season is just beginning: the first autumn gales reach the Baltic as early as the end of August, and then — until winter — every proper storm can cast ashore nuggets that have lain in the sea for thousands of years.

The mechanism is simple. Amber is only slightly heavier than water, so rough seas easily lift it from the seabed along with wood, peat, and seaweed. Wind from the northern sector pushes this load toward land, and the amber travels with it, settling exactly where the rest of the light debris accumulates. That is why experienced seekers do not look down right at the water’s edge; they walk along the drift line instead.

When to look? As the gale dies down

The best moment comes when the storm weakens but the sea is still “giving things back.” Watch the forecast: a dozen or so hours of strong wind from directions ranging from northwest to northeast is a signal to be on the beach the following morning. Dawn has two advantages — the low sun illuminates the nuggets at a sharp angle, and the competition is still asleep. On well-known stretches of coast, the first flashlights may appear on the sand long before sunrise.

Where to look? The drift line, Hel, the Vistula mouth, Stilo

The drift line looks unremarkable: a strip of algae, reeds, pieces of wood, and peat. Search it methodically — move the seaweed with a stick and look beneath larger pieces of wood, because amber rarely lies on top. Traditionally productive areas include the vicinity of Hel, the beaches near the mouth of the Vistula, and the stretch around the Stilo lighthouse, although after a strong storm, amber can turn up on any Baltic beach. The timing matters more than the location.

Amber or plastic? Three quick tests

The simplest is the saltwater test: put three tablespoons of salt into a glass, stir until it has completely dissolved, and drop in your find. Amber floats in such a strong brine, while most plastics and all stones sink. At home, add a UV flashlight — genuine amber glows milky blue, as if slightly misted, while plastic usually does not glow at all or glows in a completely different way. Rubbed against wool, amber becomes electrically charged and attracts scraps of paper. And do not dismiss a nugget just because it is not honey-transparent: cloudy, “milky” varieties are fully genuine amber — we wrote about them in our article on “amber cheese”.

Beware of phosphorus from shipwrecks. This is not a curiosity—it is a warning

Alongside amber, Baltic beaches sometimes yield white phosphorus from ammunition sunk after the Second World War. It looks deceptively similar: a yellowish, waxy nugget with an “amber-like” sheen, practically impossible to distinguish by hand. The difference reveals itself at the worst possible moment — dried phosphorus can ignite spontaneously at around 30 degrees, and the warmth of your body in a trouser pocket can easily bring it to that temperature. The result is deep, difficult-to-heal burns. The rule is therefore absolute: do not carry beach finds in your pocket. Take a metal container on your walk — even a tea tin — and put everything you collect in it. If a nugget starts smoking, throw it away immediately.
