How much does amber cost — there is no single price: you will pay roughly a few złoty per gram for small pieces, while large, attractive specimens start — also approximately, because prices change from season to season — at around 100 zł per gram. The value depends on the individual piece: its weight, color, transparency, treatment, and authenticity. Below: six pricing factors, approximate prices per gram of raw material, actual prices of finished jewelry, and advice on what to do with amber found on the beach.

How much does amber cost? The short answer

Amber is not quoted like gold — there is no exchange-listed price list to check in the morning. The price is negotiable and depends heavily on the individual piece. What is more, the relationship between price and weight is nonlinear: large specimens are disproportionately rare, so the price per gram rises with the size of the piece. For small pieces, you can expect to pay roughly a few groszy to a few złoty per gram; for a large, attractive specimen, the rate may be several times higher.

One more qualification: a finished jewelry item is priced as a whole — the piece, cut, labor, and setting — rather than as “grams of amber plus grams of metal.” That is why the question of how much amber costs has two different answers: one for raw material and another for jewelry. Here are both.

What determines the price of amber — 6 factors

1. Weight and size of the piece — the number-one factor. Large specimens are disproportionately rare, so the larger the piece, the higher the price, both overall and per gram.
2. Color — typical shades include cognac, honey, and yellow; rarer and more highly valued colors include milky white, green, and blue (the most famous blue amber comes from the Dominican Republic — it is a different resin from Baltic amber).
3. Transparency and interior — plant inclusions, and especially animal inclusions, can multiply the collector’s value. An insect trapped inside is a remnant of resin from around 40 million years ago; we discuss how amber forms and where inclusions come from separately.
4. Treatment — a raw piece, a polished cabochon, and a faceted stone belong to different price ranges; labor and the loss of mass during cutting increase the price of the finished item.
5. Enhancement — pressed amber (reconstructed from small pieces) and amber treated thermally in an autoclave is cheaper than fully natural amber of the same appearance. An honest seller will state this clearly.
6. Setting and brand — 925 silver, gold plating, or gold changes the final price because a jewelry item is priced as a whole.

How much does one gram of amber cost? Prices per gram of raw material

The question of amber’s price per gram makes sense only with a qualification: rates are negotiable, change from season to season, and depend on the assessment of a particular batch, so treat all the figures below only as approximate orders of magnitude.

• Small pieces — roughly a few złoty per gram, while the smallest fractions may be priced in groszy.
• Attractive pieces weighing several grams — approximately several dozen złoty per gram.
• Large specimens — roughly from around 100 zł per gram upward; specimens weighing several hundred grams and kilogram-sized pieces are priced individually, as collector’s items.

Raw material is purchased in weight fractions — the larger the fraction, the higher the rate per gram. Amber buyers operate mainly along the Baltic coast, in the Tri-City area and its surroundings; it is no coincidence that Gdańsk is sometimes called the world capital of amber. We deliberately do not quote the purchasing prices of specific companies — they change faster than any article.

Why does finished jewelry cost more than the weight of the stone alone would suggest? Because you are paying for the whole piece: a selected specimen, cutting (during which some of the weight is irretrievably lost), labor, and the setting — ours is sterling silver plated with 24-karat gold. Every honest jeweler prices their work the same way.

Green, milky, with an inclusion — varieties and price

Baltic amber is succinite — fossilized resin distinguished by a succinic acid content of approximately 3–8%. Its typical shades are cognac, honey, and yellow. Naturally green amber is rare, but in the marketplace, the green color may also result from heat treatment or a dark setting background — which is why, for colored varieties, the seller’s declaration regarding the origin of the color also affects the price (this is the same issue as “enhancement” mentioned above). Milky white amber is also rarer and more highly valued, while the most famous blue amber comes from the Dominican Republic — it is a different resin from Baltic succinite.

Specimens with animal inclusions are a category of their own: amber containing an insect is priced individually as a collector’s item, and no “per gram” rates apply.

I found amber on the beach — how much is it worth?

The most honest answer to the question of how much beach-found amber is worth is that small pieces collected during a walk have mainly sentimental value, not market value. The smallest fractions receive the lowest prices from buyers, so a handful of crumbs is more a vacation memory than a fortune.

How not to overpay: imitations and enhanced amber

“Bargains” on amber may turn out to be imitations. The most common pitfalls include copal — younger, subfossilized resin that is softer than amber but may be sold under its name — as well as plastics and glass, from old Bakelite to modern synthetic resins. Pressed amber is a separate case: technically it is still amber, but it is reconstructed from small pieces and is therefore cheaper, which an honest seller will state clearly.

Treat home tests only as approximate: amber usually floats in heavily salted water (but some plastics behave similarly, so the result is inconclusive), becomes electrically charged when rubbed, and may develop a resinous smell only after vigorous rubbing until it warms up. We advise against the fire test — it damages the item and proves nothing.
