It crystallizes mainly in pegmatites and metamorphic rocks, forming characteristic prismatic crystals with pronounced longitudinal striations and a glassy sheen. A distinguishing feature of this group is its rich range of colors, and individual specimens may display zoned structures, smoothly changing color along the length of a single crystal.
