After the engagement comes the time for the wedding. This is a major event, symbolized by wedding rings. These special rings, by the very tradition of the marriage day, should accompany us for the rest of our lives. However, they are not a low-budget expense, so before the ceremony the bride and groom spend a long time thinking about buying the most beautiful and durable rings. At the wedding altar, after saying their marriage vows, the newlyweds place them on each other's hands. According to established custom in Poland, the wedding ring is worn on the right hand, on the ring finger. This tradition is similar in Spain, Greece, Germany, Ukraine, as well as Venezuela, Chile, and Bulgaria. On the other hand, in the left hand, we can spot a wedding ring among residents of the United States, Sweden, France, Romania, Egypt, or Ireland.

For some time now in Poland, it has been accepted that people who have lost a spouse move their wedding ring from the right hand to the left hand. In this way, a widow or widower shows mourning after the loss of a loved one. To avoid an uncomfortable situation or an unpleasant question, it is worth remembering this very important detail.

The symbolism of wearing rings on different fingers.

Today, jewelry is treated primarily as decoration and a form of expressing one's own style or even personality. In the past, however, people attached much greater importance to it. Interestingly, rings worn on different fingers carry different information about a specific person. Here is their symbolism:

• Wedding ring on the right thumb — a symbol of belonging to the LGBTQ community and of being single.
• Wedding ring on the left thumb — more and more often gold rings are worn on the left thumb to emphasize a homosexual marriage. In the past, rings were worn on the thumb to emphasize wealth (England), and by professional soldiers to signal a high decoration.
• Ring on the little finger — sometimes interpreted as belonging to a fraternity, a gangster group, or having an heirloom ring. A gold ring on the little finger can also mean openness to relationships and sexuality. This does not exclude the fact that jewelry worn this way is currently one of the biggest fashion trends.
• Decorative ring on the middle finger of the right hand — the most universal place, with no assigned specific meaning. If you want others to see the ring only as a beautiful ornament, the middle finger of the right hand is the best place for it.

It is worth remembering, however, that it is only up to us whether we identify with the symbolism given above or assign our own meaning to the jewelry we wear. People who do not pay attention to this follow current trends, wearing rings on any fingers they like, and that is perfectly fine.

In our country, the greatest importance is attached to the place where the engagement ring is, and then the wedding ring. Other combinations of wearing jewelry and the meaning associated with them are most often replaced by fashion and the trends it sets.
