The ancients discovered that striking this mineral against flint or steel produced showers of bright sparks—in the days before matches, this was an essential technology, key to household hearths and sacred fires. The Roman historian Pliny the Elder wrote of “the stone that strikes fire,” and according to ancient accounts, the Greeks also treated the golden mineral as an amulet: the spark trapped in the stone was thought to symbolize vital energy.
