The partial lunar eclipse took place on the night of August 27–28, 2026: the partial phase began around 4:33 a.m., and in Warsaw the Moon set at around 5:45 a.m. Only the earlier part of the event was visible from Poland—the maximum at 6:12 a.m. took place below our horizon.

The eclipse has already taken place—what’s next in the sky

The event unfolded as predicted: the partial phase began in the early hours of August 28, and over Poland it ended not because of the eclipse’s progression, but simply because the Moon set. The viewing window was narrow, as we announced—in Warsaw, about 70 minutes, with the disk hanging less than one degree above the horizon toward the end. Those with an unobstructed view to the west could see a clearly “bitten” disk; those looking from behind buildings or trees most likely saw nothing. The deepest, copper-colored phase at 6:12 a.m. was invisible from Poland for geometric reasons—and that did not change.

If you came here after the event, the most practical information is this: the next lunar eclipse worth setting an alarm for is farther away than the frequency of these events might suggest. The nearest one, on February 20, 2027, will be penumbral—meaning the Moon’s disk will only dim subtly, and it will be easy not to notice the change with the naked eye at all. The real spectacle will not come until a deep partial or total eclipse.

Another event is closer, though: on August 2, 2027, there will be a solar eclipse—partial in Poland, with about 40% of the Sun’s disk covered. The path of totality will pass through places where August weather favors observation: southern Spain, Gibraltar, Morocco, and northern Africa. Solar eclipses follow the opposite rule from lunar ones: never look without a certified filter, including when 40% of the disk is covered and even through clouds.

Until then, the sky is not empty. The nearest opportunities requiring no equipment are meteor showers—the Orionids around October 21 and the Geminids on the night of December 13–14, the richest shower of the year. Both observations require the same things as that August night: a dark location, patience, and no expectations shaped by long-exposure photographs.

This is a partial eclipse, but an exceptionally deep one: at maximum, Earth's shadow covers 96.2% of the disk, so the Moon then looks almost as it would during a total eclipse, with its characteristic copper-red coloring. The problem is that this most spectacular moment occurs over Poland after moonset. Sixteen days after the August solar eclipse, we get a phenomenon with opposite requirements: it is safe to look at with the naked eye, without any protection, but you have to get up before dawn and have a truly unobstructed western horizon.

When the eclipse began—the times step by step

It all took place in the early morning, over less than three hours. The times are given in the time observed in Poland (CEST), with the qualification “approximately.”

The times of the best viewing moment and moonset apply to Warsaw. We do not have verified data for other cities and do not intend to guess—we would rather have no apparent precision than misleading precision. The general rule is simple, though: the farther west in Poland you are, the later the Moon will set and the larger a part of the phenomenon you will manage to see. It is worth setting your alarm for the beginning of the partial phase, rather than for “quarter to six.”

Why only part of the spectacle was visible from Poland

A lunar eclipse is visible from the entire hemisphere experiencing night at that moment, which is usually its advantage—you do not have to travel anywhere. This time, however, the geometry is unfavorable: the eclipse occurs in the early morning, and the full Moon sets roughly when the Sun rises—here, that happens before Earth's shadow has time to cover almost the entire disk.

There is one practical conclusion: do not plan your outing “for the maximum,” because by 6:12 the Moon will already have set over Poland or will be just below the horizon. In Warsaw, the actual observation window will be about 70 minutes, from 4:33 to 5:45. During that time, the eclipse will become genuinely distinct, but it will not reach the coppery hue familiar from photographs of total eclipses here; images from the deepest phase will be taken where night is still in progress at that time.

It is better to know this in advance, because this is where the most common disappointment arises: someone gets up before five to see a red disk like the one on a magazine cover, but finds the Moon low above the rooftops, with a dark, truncated edge. It is still a beautiful sight—just worth going out to see it knowingly.

Where to stand: you need an unobstructed western view

This decision matters more than the equipment. At the best moment, the Moon will be less than one degree above the horizon in Warsaw—roughly the width covered by a little finger held at arm’s length. At that altitude, a row of trees or the roof of a neighboring building is enough to make you miss everything.

  • Look for an unobstructed view to the west: a hill, a field, a lakeshore or seashore, or a window facing west. The lower the horizon line is in your view, the longer the observation will last.
  • Visit the spot beforehand, during the day. It is difficult to tell from a map whether the view ends at a wall of trees, and at four in the morning there will be no time to relocate.
  • Check the cloud cover right along the horizon. A band of clouds that you would not even notice high in the sky can block the entire phenomenon here.
  • Binoculars help, but they are not necessary. They show the boundary of Earth’s shadow on the disk nicely; an eclipse this deep is visible to the naked eye.

Do you need filters? No—and that is the fundamental difference

No, without any “but.” A lunar eclipse is completely safe for your eyes: you do not need eclipse glasses, filters, or any other protection. You can look at it with the naked eye for as long as you like, as well as through binoculars, a telescope, or a camera lens.

This question comes up again after the August solar eclipse, during which a certified filter was an absolute necessity—and it is good that it does, because when it comes to this, it is better to ask one time too many. The mechanism is completely different: then we were looking directly at a source of light; now we are looking at a rock illuminated by reflected light, additionally dimmed by Earth’s shadow. At most, you should bring a warm jacket and a flashlight for the way back.

What was once associated with a lunar eclipse

Before the Moon’s movement could be calculated years in advance, its darkening disk understandably aroused anxiety—in many traditions, noise was used to drive away whatever was believed to be devouring it, while the phenomenon itself was interpreted as a harbinger of change. Today, its geometry is known down to the minute, and those old stories remain an interesting record of humanity’s relationship with the sky, not instructions on what to do.

Not in all its glory from Poland. The copper-red color is strongest around the maximum (approximately 6:12), when Earth’s shadow covers 96.2% of the lunar disk—and by then, the Moon is already below the horizon here. We will see a deep partial phase: a disk with a clearly cut-off, dark edge.

What if it’s cloudy?

With an event occurring just above the horizon, clouds are the main risk, and there is little you can do about them. Online livestreams from places where it is still night at that time—and where the maximum is therefore also visible—are an option. Lunar eclipses occur regularly; this is not a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

No exaggeration: from Poland, the most beautiful part of this eclipse was not visible—the deepest, copper-colored phase took place after the Moon had set.
